Prescription Med Vs Natural Treatment For Rheumatoid Arthritis

A quick comparison between a natural treatment for Arthritis and a pharmaceutical drug… Warning:  I’m a little angry about all the side effects!

Nutritionist Doctor, Alternative treatment for arthritis, Prescription vs nutritional supplement

I just saw a commercial for an arthritis medication. Of course, the warning part of the ad was WAY longer than the rest of it. (I didn’t think there was any reason to name of the drug here, so I just used the underscore… I don’t need them coming after me.)

Here’s the warnings:Warning label on pharmaceutical prescription medication for arthritis

____ can lower ability to fight infections including tuberculosis

Sometime serious or fatal infections and cancers have happened in patients taking ___

Don’t start taking ___ if you have any infections

Tears in the stomach or intestines, low blood cell counts, and higher liver tests and cholesterol levels HAVE happened.

Your dr should perform blood tests before you start and while taking ___, and should routinely check certain liver tests

Tell your dr if you have been to a region where certain fungal infections are common.

What’s infuriating to me is that there’s TONS of research available on about fucoidan for arthritis, and it’s even being used to treat arthritis across the globe, AND it actually helps support instead of destroy the immune system! Fucoidan, a nutrient found in certain seaweed, actually helps fight infection, where this drug causes infection! I don’t understand why they don’t focus on REAL treatments, instead of on drugs that cause problems and then we need additional medication to help fight the new health issues!
Fucoidan is also being used in Germany and Japan to treat cancer. It improves chemo efficacy, so it’s used along side traditional medication to improve outcomes.
You can access studies on fucoidan by going to and typing “fucoidan” into the search bar.  Add other terms, like “infection”, “cancer”, “inflammation”, “immune system”, “thyroid”… just about any illness you can think of and there’s probably at least one study you can view.  When you start typing “fucoidan” into the search bar, you’ll see a lot of suggestions.  That will give you a good idea of what it’s being studied for.  In fact, you’ll see that there’s studies for just about all of those side effects mentioned in the arthritis ad!   5 years ago there were only 50 published studies on fucoidan.  Now there are over 1,100.  What that means is that scientists, doctors and pharmaceutical companies are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of fucoidan, and funding studies.

I started taking fucoidan in 2012 for Multiple Sclerosis. It helps control my symptoms, probably because it’s such an effective anti-inflammatory. I’m so thankful that I was taking it for MS when I was dx with breast cancer. I increased my regular MS dose and my tumor shrunk from 8cm to 7 in the 2 months prior to surgery. I often wonder if the reason my cancer hadn’t spread was because I’d been taking the fucoidan already. Maybe it saved my life. One thing I know for sure, is that I will never stop taking it.  When I ran out of my first bottle, I started losing use of my left hand and foot, just like the initial onset of MS in 1998. By the second day without it I needed my cane again, and couldn’t type or hold a glass with my left hand. Tongue atrophy set in and it was hard to talk or swallow. I woke in the night scared I was going to choke on my saliva because my tongue wasn’t working properly. I will NEVER be without it again!

**Please note: Do NOT take any fucoidan supplement if you are on blood thinners. Fucoidan is a natural blood thinner and could cause your prescription blood thinners to make you hemophiliac.  Could fucoidan work better than pharmaceuticals?  I don’t know.  Ask your doctor.  Please, seriously, please do not make that switch on your own.  My Mom died due to a blood clotting condition.  They took her off her meds for a surgery and a blood clot formed that filled her lungs.  They didn’t think to X-ray her lungs prior to the surgery.  Please learn from that experience.  If you are on blood thinners be proactive with it.  If you do decide to try a natural supplement instead of traditional prescription drugs, then make sure you’re getting your blood tested.  Please make the transition with your doctor.  I do believe that the natural alternative is better for us in the long run, but without clinical data to help determine dose, you MUST regularly check your blood.
