Thousands of kids got sick, hundreds hospitalized from contact with laundry ‘Pods’
By Rebecca Heriz
Doctors have started warning parents about those popular single use laundry packets, or Pods. The detergent in the pods is more concentrated than regular detergent, and the colorful candy-like designs appeal to young kids. My Mother-In-Law had a container of them sitting out one day when we were over there and quick as could be my 3 yr old grabbed one and started playing with it.. EEK! I hadn’t ever warned my kids about those pods because we don’t have anything like them in my house. I wasn’t prepared, and never expected that he’d find them so appealing. I’m really grateful he didn’t pop it into his mouth!
Kids like helping out with household chores so be sure to heed the warnings from Poison Control to keep kids safe from cleaning supplies:
- Always keep detergent containers closed, sealed and stored up high, out of the reach of children.
- Follow the instructions on the product label.
- Call your local poison center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect a child has come in contact with this detergent.
The skin on the pods is designed to dissolve quickly, which means even handling them can lead to absorbing the chemicals through your skin, so be sure to wash hands thoroughly after handling.
